WHY
The ocean is essential for life on Earth, but it is threatened by human activities. In order for political decision-makers to develop relevant, coordinated, and ambitious actions, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive, transdisciplinary understanding of its evolution.
While the number of global environmental assessments synthesizing ocean knowledge to support evidence-based interventions is increasing, it is now crucial to improve their actionability and uptake by decision-makers. A gap in the ocean science-policy interface indicates that coherent evidence-based knowledge is not yet being effectively translated into action.
There is a need to create a global organization that aggregates and promotes knowledge exchange, enabling decision-makers to make effective and informed decisions for ocean sustainability.
This is the ambition of IPOS.
